He was commissioned in 1867, in the service of the Royal Marines Artillery.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, London, England.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1870.1 He fought in the Perak Expedition between 1875 and 1876, where he was mentioned in dispatches.1 He fought in the Zulu War in 1879.1 He fought in the Egypt Campaign in 1882.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1882.1

Sir Edward Willis Duncan Ward, 1st Bt. was born on 17 December 1853 at Oban, Argyllshire, Scotland.3 He was the son of Captain John Ward and Mary Hope Bowie.3 He married Florence Caroline Simons, daughter of Henry Minchin Simons and Caroline Melvill, on 15 February 1880 at Camberwell, Surrey, England.1 He died in 1928.3
He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) He was created 1st Baronet Ward [U.K.] on 24 January 1914.
