He was educated at Royal Naval College, Darmouth, Devon, England.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.1 He was Captain, BOAC, where he navigated the first trans-Atlantic commercial flight between 1934 and 1939.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he became a POW.1 He gained the rank of Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force.1 He was Rector between 1955 and 1962 at Great Glemham, Suffolk, England.1
