He was educated between 1759 and 1763 at Royal High School, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2 He gained the rank of Ensign on 25 June 1771 in the 37th Regiment of Foot.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 9 May 1774 in the 7th Fusiliers.2 He fought in the Siege of Fort St. Jean in 1775, where he was taken prisoner.2 He gained the rank of Captain in December 1775 in the 71st Regiment of Foot (Fraser’s Highlanders.)2 He gained the rank of Major in December 1777 in the 74th Regiment of Foot (Argyleshire Highlanders.)2 He gained the rank of Major in 1780 in the 100th Regiment of Foot.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 19 February 1781.2 He fought in the Defence of Mangalore, against Tippo Sultan and the French.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the 2nd Battalion, 42nd Regiment.1
