     He was educated at Bedford Grammar School, Bedford, Bedfordshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1913.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Naval Reserve.1 He fought in the First World War between 1916 and 1918.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1918.1 He gained the rank of Admiral in 1924.1
