Surgn.-Maj. Edmund Baron Hartley, V.C.1 
Surgn.-Maj. Edmund Baron Hartley, V.C. was born on 6 May 1847 at Ermington, Devon, England.1 He was the son of Edmund Hartley and Sophia Baron.1 He married Constance Ellen Aldridge, daughter of Walter William Aldridge and Mary Ann Wheaton, in 1874 at Holborn, London, England.1 He died on 20 March 1919 at age 71.1
He fought in the Basuto War in 1879.1 He gained the rank of Surgeon-Major in the Cape Mounted Rifles.1 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.), for rescuing a corporal under heavy fire, for his actions on 5 June 1879.1 He was Principal Medical Officer of the Colonial Forces.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.)1
