     Martha Holmes was the daughter of Maj.-Gen. Richard Holmes.2 She married Philip Wharton, 1st Duke of Wharton, son of Thomas Wharton, 1st Marquess of Wharton and Lucy Loftus, on 2 March 1714/15.1 She died on 14 April 1726.1
     From 2 March 1714/15, her married name became Wharton. After her marriage, Martha Holmes was styled as Marchioness of Wharton on 12 April 1716. After her marriage, Martha Holmes was styled as Duchess of Wharton on 28 January 1718.
