     He was educated at Downside School, Bath, Somerset, England.1 He fought in the Second World War, in the Middle East, Italy and Burma, and was mentioned in dispatches.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 27th Lancers.1 He graduated from Hertford College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1947 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He graduated from Hertford College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He graduated from Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Peeblesshire in 1983.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1987.1 He lived in 2003 at Juniper Bank, Walkerburn, Peebles-shire, Scotland.1
