William Ewart Gladstone was born on 29 December 1809.1 He was the son of Sir John Gladstone, 1st Bt. and Anne MacKenzie Robertson.1,4 He married Catherine Glynne, daughter of Sir Stephen Richard Glynne, 8th Bt. and Hon. Mary Griffin, on 25 July 1839 at Liverpool, Lancashire, EnglandG.1 He died on 19 May 1898 at age 88.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1831 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Newark between 1832 and 1845.1 He held the office of Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1845.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) Sir John Gladstone, 1st Bt. 
He was given the name of John Gladstones at birth.3 On 10 February 1835 his name was legally changed to John Gladstone by Royal Licence.4 He was created 1st Baronet Gladstone, of Fasque and Balfour, co. Kincardine [U.K.] on 18 July 1846.3
