He held the position of 16th Chief of the Clan Ay from.1 He held the position of 21st Chief of the Clan Shaw from.1 He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England.1 He fought in the First World War.1 He was commissioned in 1918 with the rank of officer, in the service of the Seaforth Highalnders.1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.) in 1921.1 He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1924.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Ross and Cromarty.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Ross and Cromarty in 1934.1 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1940, where he became a POW in France.1 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries, Scotland (F.S.A.Scot.)1 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.) in 1948.1 He was admitted to the Royal Company of Archers.1 He was recognised by Lord Lyon King of Arms, and matriculated his arms at the Lyons Court on 10 November 1958.1 He held the office of Falkland Pursuivant Extraordinary between June 1966 and August 1966.1
