     He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.¹ He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.² He gained the rank of officer in 1915 in the Gordon Highlanders.² He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918.¹ He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.² He retired from the military in 1947, with the rank of Colonel, late of the Gordon Highlanders.¹

     Alexander William Pirie was born on 20 August 1899.¹ He was the son of Lt.-Col. Duncan Vernon Pirie and Hon. Evelyn Courtenay Forbes-Sempill.² He married Annie Ridley Richardson, daughter of Herbert Joseph Richardson, on 30 November 1935.¹ He died on 24 November 1993 at age 94.¹
     He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.¹
