He retired from the military in 1867, with the rank of Officer, late of the 74th Highlanders.2 He succeeded as the 14th Baronet St. John, of Woodford, Northamptonshire [E., 1660] on 2 November 1887.1 He succeeded as the 17th Baron Saint John of Bletso, co. Bedford [E., 1559] on 2 November 1887.1 He held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire between 1905 and 1912.2

He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1917, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was awarded the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917 and bar (1918.)1 He was awarded the Croix de Guerre.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919.1 He fought in the Second World War.1
