     Lt.-Col. Sir Archibald David Stirling usually went by his middle name of David.1 He was educated at Ampleforth College, Ampleforth, Yorkshire, England. He fought in the Second World War, where he founded the Special Air Service, which operated in the North African desert behind enemy lines.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1942.1 He was commanding officer of the 1 Special Air Service Regiment in 1943 until his capture.2 He gained the rank of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel in the Scots Guards.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1946.1 He was appointed Knight in 1990.1
