     Robert Riddell was born on 14 March 1804.1 He was the son of Michael Riddell and Janet Hunter.2 He married Elizabeth Vansittart, daughter of Vice-Admiral Henry Vansittart and Mary Charity Pennefather, on 6 April 1836.1 He died on 18 November 1864 at age 60.1

     He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Engineers.1
