Brig.-Gen. Charles Herbert Rankin1

     Brig.-Gen. Charles Herbert Rankin was born on 26 May 1873.2 He was the son of Sir James Rankin, 1st Bt. and Annie Laura Bushell.2 He married Enid Maud Williams, daughter of Judge Gwylim Williams and Emma Eleanor Williams, on 25 April 1908.1 He died on 8 July 1946 at age 73.2
     He gained the rank of officer in 1893 in the 7th Hussars.2 He fought in the Battle of Matabeleland in 1896.2 He gained the rank of Colonel in the 7th Hussars.2 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Queen’s Medal with eight clasps anf King’s Medal with two clasps.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1900.2 He was Commander of the 105th Infantry Brigade.2 He was Commander of the Ambala Cavalry Brigade.2 He fought in the First World War, he was mentioned in despatches three times.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel between 1915 and 1916 in the 4th Hussars.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1916.2 He gained the rank of Commander between 1916 and 1919 in the 4th Cavalry Brigade.2 He gained the rank of Commander between 1920 and 1924 in the Sialkot Cavalry Brigade.2 He gained the rank of Territorial Colonel Commandant in 1921.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1923.2 He gained the rank of Brigadier-General in 1927 in the 7th Hussars.2
