He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of officer between 1849 and 1856 in the Scots Fusilier Guards.1 He fought in the Crimean War.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Portarlington between 1857 and 1865.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Portarlington between 1868 and 1880.1 He succeeded as the 4th Earl of Portarlington, in the Queen’s County [I., 1785] on 1 March 1889.1 He succeeded as the 5th Lord Dawson, Baron Dawson of Dawson’s Court, in the Queen’s County [I., 1770] on 1 March 1889.1 He succeeded as the 5th Viscount Carlow, co. Carlow [I., 1776] on 1 March 1889.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)1
