He held the office of Lieutenant of the City of London.1 He held the office of Sheriff of London and Middlesex between 1888 and 1889.1 He held the office of Lord Mayor of London between 1899 and 1900.1 He was created 1st Baronet Newton, of The Wood, Sydenham Hill, Lewisham, Kent and Kottingham House, Burton-on-Trent, co. Stafford [U.K.] on 18 May 1900.1 He was Chairman of the City Police Committee between 1906 and 1911.1 He was chairman of Harrods.3
