He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1682 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was appointed Knight on 15 January 1682/83.1 By his marriage Sir Humphrey acquired large estates in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, which in addition he developed assiduously as to mineral deposits, though not without opposition locally and in Parliament.1 He was a pamphleteer and religious polemicist.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cardiganshire from 1700 to 1701.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cardiganshire between 1702 and 1705.1 He held the office of Constable of Neath Castle in 1703.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Totnes between 1705 and 1707.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cardiganshire between 1710 and 1713.1

He was given the name of William Mackworth at birth.1 On 19 January 1715 his name was legally changed to William Mackworth-Praed added on his friend John Praed’s deeding him his (John’s) estates in gratitude for help given by the Mackworths.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for St. Ives.1
