Sir John Murray MacGregor of Mac Gregor, 1st Bt.1 
He held the office of Auditor-General [Bengal].1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Honourable East India Company Service.1 Circa 1793 an Act of Parl was passed repealing the statutes against Clan Gregor and allowing the names Gregor and MacGregor to be used again.2 Soon afterwards 856 clansmen of the name MacGregor subscribed a deed admitting John MacGregor or Murray of Lanrick to be ‘proper and true Chief of the Clan Alpin.2‘ He held the position of 18th Chief of the Clan Gregor from in 1795.1 He was created 1st Baronet MacGregor, of Lanrick and Balquhidder [Great Britain] on 3 July 1795.1
