He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.3 He graduated from Magdalene College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)3 He held the office of Member of the Inverness-shire County Council in 1932.3 He fought in the Second World War.3 He gained the rank of Major in the 4th Queen’s Own Cameron Highalnders (TA.)3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) in 1942.3 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) in 1942.3 He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1944.3 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.)3 He held the office of Chairman of Skye District Council between 1945 and 1964.3 He succeeded as the 7th Baron Macdonald of Slate, co. Antrim [I., 1776] on 20 January 1947.3 He held the position of Chief of the Name and Arms of Macdonald from on 1 May 1947.3 He was recognised by Lord Lyon King of Arms, and matriculated his arms at the Lyons Court on 1 May 1947.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Inverness-shire between 1952 and 1970.3
