He was given the name of Richard Sydney Grenville Smith at birth.1 He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He was educated at University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He was commissioned in 1928, in the service of the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry.1 He gained the rank of officer in 1932 in the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars.1 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1941, when he became a POW.1 He fought in the Malayan Emergency between 1948 and 1951, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1950.1 He retired from the military in 1954, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.1 On 20 March 1954 his name was legally changed to Richard Sydney Grenville Close-Smith by Deed Poll.1
