He was he unsuccessfully claimed the baronetcy of Innes of Coxton before the Lyon Court between 1784 and 1811.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Ross and Cromarty between 1809 and 1812.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wick Burghs between 1812 and 1818.1 He was created 1st Baronet Innes, of Lochalsh, Balmacara, Ross-shire and of Coxton, Morayshire [U.K.] on 29 October 1818.1 In 1819 he was granted armorial supporters.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wick Burghs between 1820 and 1830.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Sutherland in 1831.1
