He was educated at Gresham’s School, Holt, Norfolk, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant between 1921 and 1923 in the Coldstream Guards.1 He succeeded as the 11th Earl of Northesk [S., 1647] on 5 December 1921.1 He succeeded as the 11th Lord Rosehill and Eglismauldie [S., 1639] on 5 December 1921.1 He was adopted by Phyllida Rosemary Carnegie.2
