Sir James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth, 1st Bt. was born on 20 July 1804.1 He was the son of Robert Kay and Hannah Phillips.2 He married Janet Shuttleworth, daughter of Robert Shuttleworth and Janet Marjoribanks, on 24 February 1842.1 He died on 26 May 1877 at age 72.1
He was given the name of James Phillips Kay at birth.3 He graduated from Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)3 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)3 In 1842 his name was legally changed to James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth by Royal Licence.3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lancashire.3 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lancashire.3 He was created 1st Baronet Kay-Shuttleworth [U.K.] on 22 December 1849.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1864.3 He was Secretary of the Commitee Council on Education.3
