Vernon North Graves was born on 11 July 1911.1 He was the son of Adolphus Edward Paget Graves and Hilda May Cruickshank.2 He married Elizabeth Constance Penrose-Fitzgerald, daughter of Captain Robert Francis Uniacke Penrose-Fitzgerald, on 22 March 1947.1 He died on 4 October 1960 at age 49, following a climbing accident.1
     He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.)1
