Sir Alexander Gordon of Earlston and Afton, 2nd Bt.1
He fought in the Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1679, after which he escaped to Holland.1 On 19 February 1681 he was declared guilty of treason in absentia and sentenced to death and forfeiture of his estates.1 On 21 August 1683 he was captured at sea and ordered beheaded but pardoned and after 6 years’ imprisonment in Edinburgh Castle, on the Bass Rock and in Blackness Castle, was released on 5 Jan 1689.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Gordon, of Earlston and Afton, co. Kirkcudbright [N.S., 1706] in December 1718.1
