     He was educated at Sherborne School, Sherborne, Dorset, England^G.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1939 in the Royal Artillery (SR.)¹ He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1940, where he became a POW.¹

     Mary Gertrude Nowland is the daughter of Dr. Horace N. Nowland.² She married, firstly, S/Ldr. J. K. Macpherson before 1948.¹ She married, secondly, Martin Shirley Heathcote, son of James Shirley Heathcote and Agnes Ethel Hatcher, on 15 January 1948.¹
     From before 1948, her married name became Macpherson.¹ From 15 January 1948, her married name became Heathcote.

     Richard Desmond Heathcote was born on 1 April 1950.¹ He is the son of Martin Shirley Heathcote and Mary Gertrude Nowland.² He married Carmel Montgomery, daughter of William Montgomery, in 1973.¹
