Admiral Hon. John Byng1

Admiral Hon. John Byng was born on 28 October 1704.2 He was the son of Admiral George Byng, 1st Viscount Torrington and Margaret Master.1 He died on 14 March 1757 at age 52, executed by firing squad aboard H.M.S. Monarque at Portsmouth, as Voltaire said, ‘pour encourager les autres’ after a Court Martial had found him guilty of bad judgement but cleared him of cowardice and recommended him to mercy.2
He bought an estate at South Mymms, Middlesex, where he built Wrotham Park.2 He gained the rank of Admiral of the Blue.1 He was court martialled for failing to ‘do his utmost’ to prevent Minorca falling to the French.3
