He was given the name of Richard Mansel at birth.1 On 24 January 1793 his name was legally changed to Richard Philipps by Royal Licence.1 He gained the rank of Commander in the Royal Navy.1 He lived at Coedgaing, Carmarthenshire, WalesG.1

Major Courtenay Mansel1 
He was also known as Courtenay Philipps.1 He gained the rank of Major in the 15th Hussars.1 On 12 May 1866 his name was legally changed to Courtenay Mansel by Royal Licence.1 On 9 November 1906 a decree in the Court of Sessions was obtained, validating the 1838 marriage in Scotland was obtained. Up until 1903, a general recognition of the validity of the 1838 marriage had led to Edward Berkeley Mansel being regarded as illegitimate, hence unable to assume the title.1

Carmarthen [E., 1622] in 1903, when his nephew relinquished use of the title in his favour.1
