Philip Mansel1 
He was also known as Sir Philip Maunsell.2 In 1435 he suceeded to his grandfather’s estates.2 He fought in the War of the Roses, as a Lancastrian.1 He fought in the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross in 1461, against Edward, Earl of March.2 In 1464 he was attainted by Parliament for his involvement in the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross.2 He fought in the Battle of Tewkesbury on 4 May 1471, where he was captured by Sir John Conyers.1

Sir Rice Mansel1 
He was also known as Rhys Maunsell.2 He was sent to Ireland at the head of a body of troops to assist the Lord Deputy in suppressing a rebellion of the Earl of Kildare.2 Circa 1536 he led troops to help the Lord Depute of Ireland suppress the rebellion of the 10th Earl of Kildare.1 He was appointed Knight circa 1536.1 He lived in 1535/36 at Margram Abbey, Glamorgan, WalesG.2 He held the office of Chamberlain of the County Palatine of Chester in 1537.1 In 1536/37 he had a grant for life of the site of the Abbey of Margam, the Office of Chamberlam of the County Palatine of Chester and the royalty of Avon Waters.2 He was granted former monastic lands at Margam, Glamorgan.3 In 1540 after the Dissolution of the Monasteries he got a lease of Margam and in purchased the entire Margam property where he built a Mansion House partly on the site of the Abbey.2 In 1544 he was concerned in an expedition against Scotland when the Isles of Arran and Bute and the Castle of Rothesay were delivered to him and formally received in the name of the King.2 He lived at Beaupre, Glamorgan, Wales.2 On 27 December 1557 he was involved in a confrontation with Sir George Herbert over salvage rights to a French trading ship which had come to grief off Oxwich Point. During this confrontaion, one of Sir George’s servants threw a stone at his daughter Anne, who was trying to intervene. She later died fom this injury.5 He lived at Oxwich Castle, Glamorgan, WalesG.2 He also had three sons (all of whom died in the lifetime of their father) and two surviving daughters by his second wife, and a younger son and a daughter by his third wife.1
