     He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.)1 He gained the rank of Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.)1 He adopted Niall Anthony Stewart Weatherall.1 He adopted Sarah Margaret Weatherall.1 He was Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps between 1992 and 2001.1
