He was educated at King’s School, Canterbury, Kent, EnglandG.2 He was educated at Caius College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.2 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1754 entitled to practise as a barrister.2 He held the office of Bencher of Inner Temple in 1762.2 He was appointed King’s Counsel (K.C.) in 1762.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Tamworth between 1768 and 1778.2 He held the office of Solicitor-General between 1770 and 1771.2 He held the office of Attorney-General between 1771 and 1778.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1778.2 In 1778 He presided at the trial of Warren Hastings.2 He held the office of Lord Chancellor between 1778 and 1792.2 He held the office of High Chancellor between 1778 and 1792.3 He was created 1st Baron Thurlow, of Ashfield, co. Suffolk [Great Britain] on 3 June 1778.3 He was created 1st Baron Thurlow of Thurlow, co. Suffolk [Great Britain] on 12 June 1792, with a special rmainder to his nephews.3 On his death his barony of Thurlow of 1778 expired.2
