He was given the name of Charles Edward Wilton at birth.2 His name was legally changed to Charles Edward Bancroft.2 He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He was commissioned on 25 August 1883 with the rank of Lieutenant, in the service of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry.2 He gained the rank of Captain on 21 January 1893 in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.1 His marriage to Margaret Catherine Grimston was annulled in 1897.2
