He was given the name of William Houstoun-Boswall at birth.1 On 7 April 1863 his name was legally changed to William Houstoun-Boswall-Preston by Royal Licence, under the terms of the will of his great-uncle, Sir Henry Lindsay Preston, Bt.1 He graduated with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was a practising barrister.1

He was educated at Marlborough College, Marlborough, Wiltshire, EnglandG.2 He fought in the First World War.2 He gained the rank of Major in the 1st Life Guards.2 He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Houstoun, of Calderhall [U.K., 1836] on 4 December 1953.1
