Lt.-Gen. Joseph Edwin Thackwell was born on 7 September 1813.2 He was the son of John Thackwell.2 He was baptised on 3 November 1813 at Dymock, Gloucestershire, England.2 He married, firstly, Eliza Maria Burnside, daughter of Lt.-Col. Henry Burnside.2 He married, secondly, Lucy Helen Highton in 1878 at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.2 He died on 14 January 1900 at age 86 at 23 Lansdowne Place, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.2
He was Aide-de-Camp to General Sir Joseph Thackwell between 1852 and 1853.2 He fought in the Crimean War between 1854 and 1856.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1
