George Pigot, 1st and last Baron Pigot of Patshull1

George Pigot, 1st and last Baron Pigot of Patshull was born on 4 March 1719.1 He was the son of Richard Pigot and Frances Goode.3 He died on 11 May 1777 at age 58 at HEIC’s Garden House, Fort St. George, Madras, IndiaG, possibly murdered after being irregularly detained at the instigation of senior members of HEIC (having fallen out with them), without legitimate issue.1
He was writer to the Honourable East Iindia Company in 1737.1 He was Sub-Secretary, Clerk of the Peace, Coroner, Company’s Solicitor and Clerk of the Court of Appeals, Honourable East Inida Company in 1742.1 He held the office of Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Fort St. George, Madras between 1755 and 1763.1 He was created 1st Baronet Pigot, of Patshull, Staffordshire [Great Britain] on 5 December 1764, with a special remainder to his brothers Hugh and then Robert.1 He purchased Patshull, Staffordshire for £100,000.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Wallingford between 1765 and 1768.1 He was created 1st Baron Pigot of Patshull, co. Dublin [Ireland] on 18 January 1766.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Bridgnorth between 1768 and 1777.1 He held the office of Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Fort St. George, Madras between 1775 and 1777.1 He acquired a gem called ‘the Pigot Diamond’, which he left to his siblings, though it was subsequently sold at lottery for just under £24,000 in 1800, then auctioned in 1802 for just under £10,000.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 On 11 May 1777 (an unknown value.)1 On his death, his barony became extinct.1

General Sir Henry Johnson, 1st Bt. was born on 1 January 1748.3 He was the son of Allen Johnson and Olivia Walsh.1,3 He married Rebecca Franks, daughter of David Franks, in 1782.3 He died on 18 March 1835 at age 87 at Bath, Somerset, England.2
He was commissioned in 1761 with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the 28th Foot.2 He fought in the American War of Independence in 1777.2 He fought in the Battle of New Ross on 5 June 1798, during the 1798 Uprising in Ireland.3 He gained the rank of Colonel in the 5th Foot.3 He held the office of Governor of Ross Castle, County Wexford.3 He was created 1st Baronet Johnson, of Bath [U.K.] on 1 December 1818.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)3
