     He fought in the Ashanti Expedition between 1895 and 1896.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Engineers.1 He was awarded the 1914 Star in 1914.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches twice.1
