     John Cuninghame was born on 13 February 1796.1 He was the son of William Cuninghame, 1st of Lainshaw and Margaret Nicolson Cranstoun.2 He married Eliza Mary Upton, daughter of Captain Clotworthy Upton and Eliza Walton, on 26 March 1831.1 He died in 1864.1
     He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)1 He lived at Lainshaw, Ayrshire, ScotlandG.1 He lived at Duchrae, Kirkcudbrightshire, ScotlandG.1 He had two other sons.1

     Captain Clotworthy Upton was born illegitimately on 23 March 1768.2 He was the son of Clotworthy Upton, 1st Baron Templetown and Elizabeth Boughton. He married Eliza Walton on 1 October 1805 at London, England.2 He died on 14 March 1822 at age 53.2
     He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy.1

     Eliza Mary Upton was born in 1812.2 She was the daughter of Captain Clotworthy Upton and Eliza Walton.3,2 She married John Cuninghame, son of William Cuninghame, 1st of Lainshaw and Margaret Nicolson Cranstoun, on 26 March 1831.1 She died on 2 May 1894 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.2
     From 26 March 1831, her married name became Cuninghame.1

     She was given the name of Maria Cuninghame at birth.1 In 1850 her name was legally changed to Maria Edmondstoune-Cranstoun when she succeeded to Cranstoun from her uncle.1
