He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1841 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He was a practising barrister in 1843.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Plymouth between 1852 and 1871.2 He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) in 1854.2 He held the office of Recorder of Penzance.2 He was Judge Advocate the Fleet and Counsel of the Admirallty between 1859 and 1863.2 He was appointed Knight in 1863.2 He held the office of Solicitor-General between 1863 and 1866.2 He held the office of Attorney-General between 1868 and 1871.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1871.2 He held the office of Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1871.2 He held the office of Judge of the Judicial Committee, Privy Council.2 He was created 1st Baron Monkswell of Monkswell, co.
