     He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1851.1 He was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society in 1852.2 He was awarded the Wollaston Medal in 1876 of the Royal Geological Society.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)1 He held the office of President of the Royal Society between 1883 and 1885.2 He was awarded the Copley Medal in 1888.2 He was awarded the Linnean Medal in 1890.2 He was awarded the Darwin Medal in 1894.2

     From 1884, her married name became Eckersley.2 From 1896, her married name became Shawcross.
