He matriculated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 20 January 1736/37.1 He succeeded as the 7th Baronet Clavering, of Axwell, co. Durham [E., 1661] on 12 May 1748.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for St. Mawes from January 1753 to 1754.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shaftesbury between 1754 and 1761.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Durham between 1768 and 1790.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 17 June 1782.1
