He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Welch Fusiliers.2 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902.2 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and was wounded.2 He gained the rank of Major in the West Kent Yeomanry, Tank Corps and Remount Service.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1918.2
