He matriculated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG, on 7 April 1755.2 He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1758.1 He was admitted to King’s Inn in 1764 entitled to practise as a Barrister.1 He was appointed King’s Counsel (K.C.) in 1768.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Tuam between 1772 and 1776.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Philipstown between 1776 and 1783.1 He held the office of 3rd Serjeant from 1776 to 1777.1 He held the office of 2nd Serjeant between 1777 and 1779.1 He held the office of Solicitor-General [Ireland] between 1779 and 1787.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Naas between 1783 and 1787.1 In 1787 Lord Ch Justice of Court of Common Pleas from cr BARON CARLETON.3 He held the office of Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas [Ireland] between 1787 and 1800.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] on 11 May 1787.1 He was created 1st Baron Carleton of Anner, co. Tipperary [Ireland] on 17 September 1789.1 He was created 1st Viscount Carleton of Clare, co. Tipperary [Ireland] on 21 November 1797.1 He held the office of Representative Peer [Ireland] between 1801 and 1826.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 3 July 1810.1 He lived at Clare, County Tipperary, IrelandG.3 He lived at Greenfields, County Cork, IrelandG.3
