     He was styled as Lord Masham between 2006 and 2021. He succeeded as the 4th Viscount Swinton, of Masham, co. York [U.K., 1955] on 21 March 2021. He succeeded as the 4th Baron Masham, of Ellington, co. York [U.K., 1955] on 21 March 2021. He succeeded as the 4th Earl of Swinton [U.K., 1955] on 21 March 2021.

     Nicholas John Cunliffe-Lister, 3rd Earl of Swinton was born on 4 September 1939.¹ He was the son of Major Hon. John Yarburgh Cunliffe-Lister and Anne Irvine Medlicott.¹ He married, firstly, Hon. Elizabeth Susan Whitelaw, daughter of William Stephen Ian Whitelaw, 1st and last Viscount Whitelaw and Cecilia Doriel Sprot, on 19 February 1966 at Guard’s Chapel, Wellington Barracks, London, England^G.¹ He and Hon. Elizabeth Susan Whitelaw were divorced.³ He married, secondly, Pamela June Wood, daughter of Thomas Wood and Doreen (?), circa July 1996 at Bridlington Register Office, Bridlington, Yorkshire, England^G.⁴ He died on 21 March 2021 at age 81.⁵
     He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.¹ He was educated at Worcester College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.¹ He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Welsh Guards.¹ He was a practising solicitor in 1966.¹ In 1974 he was granted the rank of an earl’s younger son.¹ He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Swinton [U.K., 1955] on 26 March 2006.¹ He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Swinton, of Masham, co.      Hon. Elizabeth Susan Whitelaw was born on 2 November 1944.² She is the daughter of William Stephen Ian Whitelaw, 1st and last Viscount Whitelaw and Cecilia Doriel Sprot.^1,3 She married Nicholas John Cunliffe-Lister, 3rd Earl of Swinton, son of Major Hon.      Hon. Elizabeth Susan Whitelaw usually went by her middle name of Susan.² From 19 February 1966, her married name became Cunliffe-Lister.¹ She held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the East Riding, Yorkshire in 1998.⁴ She held the office of High Sheriff of the East Riding, Yorkshire between 2004 and 2005.⁵ She held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding, Yorkshire on 21 July 2005.⁵ She was appointed Dame Commander, Royal Victorian Order (D.C.V.O.) in 2019.⁶
