General Sir William Erskine of Torry, 1st Bt. was born in March 1728 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2 He was the son of Colonel William Erskine and Henrietta Baillie.1 He married, firstly, Magdalen Myrton, daughter of Robert Myrton of Gogar.1 He married, secondly, Frances Moray, daughter of James Moray, 13th of Abercairny and Lady Christian Montgomerie, on 29 May 1767.1 He was also reported to have been married on 29 July 1767.3 He died on 19 March 1795.1,2
He gained the rank of General.1 He was commissioned in 1742, in the service of the 7th Dragoons.2 He fought in the War of the Austrian Succession.2 He fought in the Seven Years’ War.2 He was appointed Knight in 1763.2 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1777 in the 80th Foot.2 He was Quartermaster-General in America before 1779.2 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1779.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1787.2 He was created 1st Baronet Erskine, of Torry [Great Britain] on 21 June 1791.1
