He was Burgess of Edinburgh in 1684.1 He was recognised by Lord Lyon King of Arms, and matriculated his arms at the Lyons Court on 20 March 1693.1 He was created 1st Baronet Brown, of London [England] on 14 December 1699.1 He acquired a considerable fortune as a merchant of Dantzic and London.1
