Matthew McCoy1
He held the office of Chief Magistrate of Pitcairn Island in 1843.2 He held the office of Chief Magistrate of Pitcairn Island in 1853.1 On the day the Virago left Pitcairn, he was attending to the Bounty cannon, which was fired on such occasions. A hot nail, embedded in the rafter that was used as a ramrod, ignited the powder, and the cannon exploded, blowing several men aside. Matthew’s right arm was fearfully shattered and was amputated by the surgeon on the ship, but he died from his injuries a few days later.2
