Archibald McLiver1
He was a blacksmith.2 In 1920 Archibald and his family, who were living in Australia at the time, were invited to join a religious cult that was based in Benton Harbor, MI (USA). They came across the Pacific on a steam boat. Even today, daughter Miriam does not like
talk about that voyage, during which she and her mother were horribly seasick. They landed in Canada and took the railroad across the mountains and the great plains to Michigan.
Arriving in Benton Harbor, they were met by the man in charge of the cult, who presented them with a couple of (not so) ‘easy-to-follow’ instructions. First of all, they were to give him all of their money so he could ‘give it to God!’ Then, o
of that, they were to give him their daughter, Miriam, who was 10 years old at the time, so that her marriage to a suitable husband could be arranged. Well, as can be expected, this this not go over very well with Archibald. The family quickly
decided to keep their money and their daughter, saving her from marrying some old guy. This was their first American experience, but they decided to stay in Michigan anyway.2
