General John William Egerton, 7th Earl of Bridgwater was born on 14 April 1753.1 He was the son of Rt. Rev. John Egerton and Lady Anne Sophia Grey.1 He was baptised on 8 May 1753 at St. George’s Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, EnglandG.1 He married Charlotte Catherine Anne Haynes, daughter of Samuel Haynes and Elizabeth (?), on 14 January 1783 at 58 Welbeck Street, Marylebone, London, EnglandG.1 He died on 21 October 1823 at age 70 at Ashridge Park, EnglandG, without issue.1 He was buried on 30 October 1823 at Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.1
He was commissioned in 1771.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1776.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Morpeth between 1777 and 1780.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1779.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Brackley between 1780 and 1803.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1790 in the 7th Light Dragoons.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1793.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1795.1 He was Colonel of the 14th Light Dragoons between 1797 and 1823.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1802.1 He succeeded as the 8th Viscount Brackley [E., 1616] on 8 March 1803.1 He succeeded as the 7th Earl of Bridgwater [E., 1617] on 8 March 1803.1 He succeeded as the 8th Baron of Ellesmere, co. Shropshire [E., 1603] on 8 March 1803.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 28 January 1808.1 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) on 4 February 1808.1 He gained the rank of General in the Army in 1812.1

On his death, his titles became extinct.1 He was well-known as a great eccentric. According to the police, his house in Paris was full of cats and dogs, whom he dressed as ladies and gentlemen, taking them out in his carriage.1 He was also a good scholar and bequeathed £8,000 for the best work on the Goodness of God.1
