     William Cuninghame, 6th Earl of Glencairn was born in 1535. He was the son of Alexander Cuninghame, 5th Earl of Glencairn and Lady Janet Hamilton.2 He married Janet Gordon, daughter of Sir James Gordon of Lochinvar and Margaret Crichton, on 24 August 1549.2 He died from 1576 to 24 February 1579/80.1
     He succeeded as the 6th Earl of Glencairn [S., 1488] on 23 December 1574.2 He succeeded as the 6th Lord Kilmaurs [S., 1464] on 23 December 1574.2
