Field Marshal Edwin Noel Westby Bramall, Baron Bramall was born on 18 December 1923.1 He was the son of Major Edmund Haseldon Bramall and Katherine Bridget Westby.1 He married Dorothy Avril Wentworth Vernon, daughter of Brig.-Gen. Henry Albemarle Vernon, in 1949 at Winchester, Hampshire, England.1,3 He died on 12 November 2019 at age 95.4
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was commissioned in 1943, in the service of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.1 He fought in the Second World War between 1944 and 1945, in North-West Europe.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1945.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1965.1 He was Commanding Officer of the 2nd Green Jackets, King’s Royal Rifle Corps between 1965 and 1966 at MalaysiaG.1 He was Commanding Officer of the 5th Airportable Brigade between 1967 and 1969.1 He was Commanding Officer of the 1st Division, British Army of the Rhine between 1971 and 1973.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1973.1 He was Commander of the British Forces between 1973 and 1976 at Hong KongG.1 He was Colonel Commandant of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Green Jackets between 1973 and 1984.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1974.1 He gained the rank of General in 1976.1 He was Colonel of the 2nd Goorkhas after 1976.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1979.1 He gained the rank of Field Marshal in 1982.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for London in 1986.1 He was appointed Knight, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.) in 1986.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London between 1986 and 1998.1 He was created Baron Bramall, of Bushfield in the County of Hampshire [U.K. Life Peer] on 9 February 1987.1,5 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1990.1 He wrote the book The Chiefs, published 1993, co-author.1
